4 healthy alternatives to chips

News, Recipes

If you’re looking to cut down or carbs, or just trying to eat as healthy as possible this BBQ season, you may have resigned yourself to missing out on chips with your burger or steak. Fear not though because these alternatives to traditional chips are low in sugar, all natural and super easy to prepare!

 Asparagus chips

Makes 1 portion

1 packet of asparagus (or around 8 stalks)

2 tbsp coconut flour

2 tbsp almond flour

1tsp sea salt

1 large egg

Method

1.       Pre heat oven to 180c. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, and in a separate bowl, crack open the egg and whisk.

2.       Cut bottoms of asparagus (if needed) and coat each stalk in egg.

3.       Once coated, roll asparagus stalk in flour mixture. Repeat for each stalk.

4.       Place asparagus on a baking tray and cook for around 20-25 minutes until soft centre and crispy outer layer.

Parmesan courgette chips

Makes 1 portion

1 large courgette, peeled and cut into desired chip size

1 tbsp grated parmesan

2 tbsp almond or coconut flour

1tsp sea salt

1 large egg

Method

1.       Pre heat oven to 180c. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, and in a separate bowl, crack open the egg and whisk.

2.       Peel courgette and slice down the middle, dividing into two. Now cut into desired chip size (around 3 inches long and ½ inch thick should be about right).

3.       Coat courgette chips in egg and roll in dry mixture.

4.       Place chips on a baking tray and cook for around 25-30 minutes until soft centre and crispy outer layer.

Carrot chips

Makes 1 portion

2 large carrots, peeled

2 tbsp coconut flour

2 tbsp almond flour

1tsp sea salt

1 large egg

Method

1.       Pre heat oven to 180c. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, and in a separate bowl, crack open the egg and whisk.

2.       Peel carrots and cut into desired chips size. Coat carrot chips in egg and roll in dry mixture.

3.       Place on a baking tray and cook for around 20 minutes until carrots have softened

Sliced gherkin chips

Makes 1 portion

3 large gherkins, sliced and cut into chip size

2 tbsp coconut flour

2 tbsp almond flour

1tsp sea salt

1 large egg

Method

1.       Pre heat oven to 180c. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, and in a separate bowl, crack open the egg and whisk.

2.       Cut gherkins into desired chip size and coat in egg. Roll each gherkin in flour mixture.

3.       Place gherkins on a baking tray and cook for around 20 minutes until outer layer has crisped up.
